Qualifications & Experience Desired:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Prior experience working as a Sign Language Interpreter or as an ASL teacher, preferably in a school environment
- Ability to facilitate communication between deaf/hard-of-hearing students and hearing peers and staff
- Knowledge of interpreter ethics and confidentiality practices in educational settings
- Current license or certification as required by state or local guidelines
- Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative spirit
- Flexibility to adapt communication styles for different ages and learning needs
Responsibilities Include:
- Providing real-time sign language interpretation during classroom instruction, assemblies, parent meetings, and school events
- Assisting in lesson delivery for students learning American Sign Language, supporting their linguistic and cultural growth
- Collaborating with teachers, special education staff, and administration to ensure academic and social inclusion
- Helping to modify classroom materials and communication strategies as needed for accessibility
- Offering support and education about Deaf culture and effective communication techniques to staff and students
- Maintaining accurate records of services provided, in accordance with confidentiality practices
