Educational Sign Language Interpreter - Richmond, Texas
Step into a vital support role working directly with a junior high student, helping to foster communication and inclusion in an educational setting. As a Sign Language Interpreter, you’ll provide essential interpreting services in classrooms, school events, extracurricular activities such as choir, dance, and cheer, and school-related meetings. This contract position offers a consistent weekday schedule of 35 hours per week from 9:00am to 4:30pm, with occasional extra hours varying by extracurricular needs. Onsite presence is required, and you’ll work closely with educational staff to create an engaging and supportive environment for your assigned student.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- Hold interpreter certification from the Registry for the Deaf or the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
- Valid Texas driver’s license
- Previous experience working with children
- Flexibility to adapt to changing communication needs and schedules
- Willingness to complete district-required fingerprinting and credentialing, if not already on file
Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken language and classroom activities for a junior high student, ensuring accessibility in all educational settings, school programs, and events
- Attend and interpret at Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings as needed
- Provide tutoring support to hearing-impaired students under teacher guidance
- Assist with recordkeeping and required reporting
- Support student management, helping to intervene in crisis situations and communicating observed needs to teachers
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and other assigned duties while maintaining strict confidentiality
