Educational Sign Language Interpreter - Katy, TX
Experience the rewarding challenge of supporting a high school student in a behavioral class setting as a professional Sign Language Interpreter. This part-time contract opportunity runs from August 12, 2026, through May 27, 2027, with hours focused on Fridays only—averaging 6.5 hours per week, plus occasional substitute coverage.
You’ll use your American Sign Language (ASL) expertise to facilitate communication for a 9th grade student who wears cochlear implants, hearing aids, and utilizes an ALD device in the classroom. The student, recently transitioned from a Residential Day School Program, identifies as hearing and participates in instructional time where your skills will bridge the communication gap. This is a job-share role, supporting another language facilitator covering Monday through Thursday.
Qualifications and Desired Experience:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and experience as a certified Sign Language Interpreter
- Prior work in educational environments, ideally with adolescents in behavioral or special education settings
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff, teachers, and other facilitators
- Sensitivity to diverse communication needs, particularly with assistive listening devices
- Up-to-date interpreters’ licensure and relevant certifications
Responsibilities:
- Provide ASL interpretation during instructional class periods for a 9th grade student
- Adapt to occasional requests as a substitute language facilitator when needed
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in accordance with school policies
- Work collaboratively with school staff to ensure the student’s full participation and inclusion
